INTRODUCTION
The sample profiles on New Religious Movements (NRMs) presented below were written by students of the University of Costa Rica (UCR) during January-February of 2001 as part of the UCR's Program of Community Service, under the direction and supervision of PROLADES. These UCR students are in their final year of their respective Licenciate programs: Sociology, Psychology and Communications. The idea of producing profiles of NRMs in Spanish was inspired by Dr. Jeffrey Hadden's website (University of Virginia, Department of Sociology/Religious Studies) that contains profiles of NRMs in English produced by his students (Profiles: Sociology 257).
The profiles produced by PROLADES are NOT translations of Hadden's profiles, rather they are are result of fieldwork done by the UCR students and were originally written in Spanish, with minimal editing by the PROLADES staff. We are hopeful that similar profiles will be produced on NRMs in other countries of the Americas, and we are working on encouraging such efforts.
